SURVEILLANCE VIDEO: Man crashes into car, tree while allegedly on heroin

SALEM, N.H. (MyFoxBoston.com) - Police say surveillance footage captured the moment where a man, in an alleged attempt to avoid police, crashed into a car, tree and fire hydrant.

Police say an officer was patrolling a mall parking lot when he saw a vehicle stopped against a light pole. The officer allegedly saw the male driver unconscious sitting in the driver's seat, with heroin next to him.

The officer tried to make contact to check on his well being. That's when police say the driver regained consciousness and quickly drove off, crashing into the rear of a parked car, driving over a tree and coming to a rest on a fire hydrant.

No one was injured during the accident. Police arrested the driver, Alexander DiMaggio, 28 of Atkinson, New Hampshire. He was charged with reckless conduct, driving under the influence of drugs and possession of heroin.

DiMaggio was held on $2,500 bail. FOX25's Michael Henrich confirmed with Rockingham County Jail that DiMaggio did not make bail overnight, so he appeared at his arraignment through video conference at 10 a.m.  DiMaggio's bail was kept at $2,500 and he is due back in court on Tuesday with a new hearing with an attorney.

Concern about heroin abuse has reached a fever pitch in the Granite State. The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services says more than 300 people died in the state in 2014 from a drug overdose, with the majority of them related to opioids.
