Study to weigh pros, cons of potential Red Line/Blue Line link

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is taking another look at linking the Red and Blue lines.

After years of debate, it’s launching a three-month study to review the pros and cons of this major construction project.

The potential Red Line-Blue Line connector would extend the Blue Line from Bowdoin Station to Charles/MGH.

The idea has been debated and fallen in and out of favor for years.

The Boston Globe is reporting the potential luring of Amazon’s second headquarters has revived the issue, with the MBTA announcing the launch of the study by an engineering firm this week.

The assessment is expected to take about three months, and could cost about $50,000, according to the MBTA.

As Boston 25 News reported last October, the city of Boston included a Red Line/Blue Line connector in its pitch to Amazon.

The main focus of the pitch revolves around redeveloping Suffolk Downs and that site sits between two Blue Line stops.

The idea is the connector would more easily open the site up to the rest of the T’s stops, and therefore make it an easier commute for potential Amazon workers.
