BOSTON — Following the controversy involving the national anthem and a San Franciso 49ers quarterback, a state representative is once again pushing to require all professional athletes stand during the song.
Rep. David Nangle (D-Lowell) originally started this pursuit on Nov. 25, 2013. He said he was watching a Monday night football game and saw a quarterback act disrespectful during the national anthem.
Nangle sent a letter to the NFL, asking them to adopt protocols regarding the National Anthem.
The NFL wrote him back and said they would discuss the importance of respect with the Clubs. Nangle also sent letters to other professional leagues.
Since the Colin Kaepernick controversy with the 49ers, Nangle has written another letter to the NFL.
"The league has found justification in suspending Tom Brady for four games for allegedly deflating some footballs, and you have this individual who refused to stand during our national anthem. This makes no sense to me," Nangle said.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the issue this week, telling the NFL network that while he supports players who want to see societal change, the league believes strongly in patriotism.
