The Douglas Fire Department says right now, the water is about 56 degrees and when it's that cold, even experienced swimmers can cramp up quickly.
"They were having a friendly swim and she started to struggle in the water and she went down and they tried their best to get out of the water unsuccessfully," said Douglas Deputy Fire Chief John Furno.
A dive team was deployed and her body was found in about six feet of water at approximately 2:45 p.m. Officials say she was unconscious and was taken to the hospital where she died.
Officials wound not comment on whether alcohol or any of factors contributed.
*Editor's Note: State police initially reported the teen as 19 years old. Douglas police confirm she is 18 years old.
