Spring snow: Breakdown of Monday's storm

WINTER STORM WARNING AND WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY

A WINTER STORM WARNING is now in place for Boston, Norfolk county and the south shore area until 10 pm. Intense snow bands will produce some snow totals over 6", particularly in southern Plymouth and Bristol counties near the mixing line.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY will continue until 10 PM in central and eastern Mass. It ends at 6 PM in southern NH where snow will be lighter and end sooner.

This should also help snow melt on the main roads and asphalt for the evening commute, making roads wet (or slushy) opposed to snowy like the morning drive.

ACCUMULATION

3-6” snow will fall in much of Massachusetts, including Boston.  Bands of snow will result in slightly higher totals. In fact, right near the mixing line on the south coast of Massachusetts, the snow is coming down extremely hard.

Mixing on the South Coast, Cape Cod, and the islands will limit accumulations to 1-3”. I don’t see the rain snow line getting much past the Cape Cod Canal.

Southern NH will also get 3-6”, but totals will drop off fast north of Nahua.

WINDS

NE winds will increase to 10-20 mph sustained.  Gusts may approach 30 mph.  This is not strong enough to do damage.

TEMPERATURES

Dress for the 20s this morning and lower 30s this afternoon.  It will be a bit warmer in southernmost New England (Cape, Islands, South Coast) with upper 30s and lower 40s—thus the mix or change to rain!
