BOSTON — On Thursday, all MBTA vehicles will sound their horns twice at 3 p.m. to honor transit workers across the region.
The MBTA joins Amtrak, New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority, New Jersey Transit, and other regional transit operators in the #SoundTheHorn campaign. Locally, the initiative is an ode to the MBTA’s 6,385 employees and transportation workers across the region.
The effort includes simultaneously sounding the fleets of trains and bus horns to honor transportation workers.
Transportation workers, who are considered essential workers during the global pandemic, have been working tirelessly to provide a means for healthcare and other essential personnel to get around during the COVID-19 pandemic. Though ridership has been down for the MBTA, trains and buses continue to service those who need them most right now.
“The MBTA is proud to join our colleagues in public transportation in celebrating the unheralded efforts of our front line transit workforce,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak. “These men and women are the backbone of our communities, oftentimes providing the only source of transit to our neighborhoods. Today being One Boston Day makes this effort especially poignant as we honor Boston’s resiliency, generosity, and strength.”
If you happen to be outside or even inside your home and you see or hear trains and buses sounding their horns at 3 p.m. on Thursday, the MBTA is encouraging the public to post their videos and photos to social media using the #SoundTheHorn hashtag.
