CONCORD, N.H. (MyFoxBoston.com) - Travelers heading northbound on I-93 into New Hampshire Wednesday afternoon and evening dealt with severe traffic after a sinkhole opened up in Concord and an arrest at the scene caused even more of a curiosity delay.
According to the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, the sinkhole was located between exit 13 and 14 and opened up around noon on Wednesday.
Traffic was diverted off exit 13 and through downtown Concord. Drivers were asked to avoid the area. DOT officials believe a backed up drainage pipe caused water to rush through the area and erode the soil. The highway was reopened at about 10 p.m.
At the scene, a man drove around the signs, traffic cones and flags on the closed highway, then began to berate the construction workers for getting in his way.
NH state troopers approached the man, identified as Thomas Richard Conner, and determined that he was under the influence of alcohol. The 55 year-old Chichester man was arrested and charged with driving while under the influence. After a breath test, police found that he had consumed more than three times the legal limit.
Conner is due in court Sept. 4 for an arraignment.
As for the sinkhole, crews are still working on it.
