CHELMSFORD, Mass. - State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving what appears to be a wrong-way driver on Route 3 in Chelmsford.
Police said they got numerous calls around 1:28 a.m. reporting a Nissan Altima traveling at over 100 mph in the northbound lane going the wrong direction.
Shortly after, callers reported a crash involving a Nissan and a Dodge Avenger on Route 3 north, before exit 32.
State police say a preliminary investigation suggests the Nissan, driven by a 42-year-old Nashua, New Hampshire woman, struck the Dodge, driven by a 21-year-old Hudson, New Hampshire man, head on.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man was taken to Lowell General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Two lanes were closed for over three hours Monday morning. A car was seen flipped over, resting on its roof at the scene.
The identities of both victims are being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.
Gil Chantre, who works at an auto shop near the highway interchange and commutes from Lowell said more lighting on the road would make him feel safer driving around the busy interchange.
"It's kinda confusing and then we do see a lot of accidents, a lot of police over here," said Chantre. "I just think there needs to be more lights. It gets really dark outside sometimes. Sometimes it's foggy when it gets to wintertime. You can't really see it so we need more light our there to be honest."
