Search suspended for missing man in Fall River boat crash that killed 1

FALL RIVER, Mass. — One man dead, another still missing after a boat crash in Fall River. The two men were thrown into the water after the boat hit a wave. The search for the driver of the boat was suspended on Sunday evening.

The Coast Guard, with the help of local boaters, searched all Saturday night and Sunday for the man in the waters of Mount Hope Bay and Taunton River, but sadly couldn't find him.

A day after the devastating boat crash in Fall River, the grief-stricken family of a man still missing at sea stayed close to the area where it happened, hoping he would be found.

"They're in so much agony, you can tell," said Fatima DeSousa of Swansea.

By late Sunday, the search for the driver of the boat – 35-year-old Marc Hanoud of Berkley – was suspended by the Coast Guard.

Around 5:30 Saturday, Hanoud's blue powerboat hit a large wave in Mount Hope Bay. The Coast Guard says a preliminary investigation shows the boat was hopping the wake of another boat at a high speed sending Hanoud and his passenger, 42-year-old Brent Osborne, into the water.

The boat then capsized. Both men were wearing life jackets.

Another boater found Osborne in the water near the boat dock of the Tipsy Seagull Bar.

"It was a boat that went by at the same time that the accident happened and took him out of the water and took him in," DeSousa said.

Osborne was rushed to a local hospital where he died a short time later. Friends tell Boston 25 News that he leaves behind two children. Since the accident, people from across the region searched for Hanoud.

"As a boating community, everyone is always willing to lend a hand," one person said. "It's like everything else, when something tragic happens, everyone steps up and helps, it's simple."

But the Coast Guard said that after searching for more than a day, covering more than 83 square miles on the water by air and dive teams, they were suspending their efforts.

The Bristol County DA's Office is leading the investigation with several other agencies. Although the search for Hanoud has been suspended, they say they will open up that search again if they receive new information.
