CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Police in Cambridge are continuing to look for a person who opened fire in a busy part of the city, killing one person before fleeing the scene.

Several people called 911 Thursday night after hearing gunshots in the area of Hampshire Street, which was packed with people at the time.

Police tell Boston 25 News that the area is usually safe. It’s filled with shops and restaurants, and is just steps from the MIT campus.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim, who has only been identified as a man in his early 20s, collapsed in the middle of the street.

He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police said a dark colored sedan was seen leaving the scene, but they’re still unsure at this point if that was the shooter’s car.

Investigators spent hours at the scene gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses, but continue looking for the shooter.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police.
