Quincy supermarket loses business due to coronavirus fears

QUINCY — At the typically busy C-Mart supermarket in Quincy, the owners are not taking the coronavirus lightly at all.

They are constantly cleaning inside, and employees are getting their temperatures checked, and they’re all wearing masks and gloves.

The supermarket on Hayward Street is usually full, but not on Tuesday, because of coronavirus fears.

“Now it’s very slow and, no customers coming,” said manager Eric Lim.

In China, the death toll is close to 500 and confirmed cases are near 25,000.

In Massachusetts, there is one confirmed case in the Boston area.

The owners of the C-Mart are now making sure employees wear masks and gloves.

They are being so cautious, employees are even getting their temperatures checked before clocking out for the day.

“A lot of the employee here, so we need to do everyday,” Lim said.

We tested it out, and even made sure the manager didn’t have a fever.

“We do the policy, tell every employee, you know, wash hand,” Lim said.

Signs in Chinese writing are posted where employees check out.

“If feel it’s cold, or not too normal, we tell the customer to go back to the home, maybe go to doctor,” Lim said.

Some of the products they get shipped from China have left the store shelves empty.

“Now, no stuff is coming. The port is closed, closed,” Lim said.

The produce, however, remains fresh.

“The fruit, and the vegetable come from the USA, the Florida, Canada,” Lim said.

The cashiers are even being told to change their masks and gloves two times during their shift.
