Police investigating Snapchat threats by Hull middle school student

HULL, Mass. — Police and school officials are investigating a threat made on social media Wednesday after a Hull middle school student allegedly posted a photo posing with what appeared to be a gun, according to Supt. Michael F. Devine and Hull’s police chief.

The threat was reported to school officials by a parent at Memorial Middle School Wednesday afternoon, according to a joint statement from the superintendent and Hull police. A female student posted a photo of herself on Snapchat holding what appeared to be a handgun, the statement said, but was later determined to be a BB gun. Police believe the image was posted after a dispute among two students who attend the school, the statement said.

A second post from the student was reported Wednesday night by another parent that showed what appeared to be the same BB gun and a message with a “threatening nature toward another student,” the statement added. The student accused of posting the threats has been disciplined and officials said they do not believe the gun was ever fired and no one was injured.

Classes resume Thursday and school officials said they do not believe there are “any active threats toward any student or staff member at the school,” but a school resource officer will be present for the day at Memorial Middle School, according to the statement.

“With classes starting tomorrow, we wanted to act quickly and proactively to ensure that school could open on time and to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” Devine said. “We believe that the threatening photo stemmed from an argument between two students, and at this time there is no reason to believe there is any threat to the school community.”

Both of the alleged threats are being investigated by the Hull Police Department.
