NASHUA, N.H. — New Hampshire State Police are looking for a driver of a vehicle who left the scene after hitting and killing a woman on the Everett Turnpike in Nashua Wednesday night.

Police got reports about a pedestrian that had "fallen or collapsed" on the southbound side of the highway around 7:05 p.m., near exit 4, according to a news release. Minutes later, callers reported a driver had hit the pedestrian with their vehicle and then left the scene, police said.

The pedestrian, identified as Juliette Koss, 68, of Nashua, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Multiple lanes were closed for about four hours following the crash.

It's unclear why Koss may have been crossing the highway. Friends of Koss say she lived at the Greenbriar Healthcare nursing home, which sits right next to the turnpike.

"I've known her since she's been here, since I've been here," said friend Mark McMann. "I can't even comprehend right now, I can't comprehend what's going on because it's unbelievable."

Greenbriar officials could not confirm if Koss was a resident but extend their sympathies, "First and foremost we want to extend our sympathy for the tragic event that occurred on the Everett Turnpike Wednesday evening involving a woman who was tragically killed. Skilled nursing facilities, as with other healthcare providers are bound by patient privacy concerns and regulations (HIPAA) and unable to at any time confirm nor deny the status of any patient or resident."

Witnesses described the vehicle as a tan colored, mid- to full-size SUV-type vehicle, according to police. The vehicle would likely have frontend and bumper damage.

The investigation is ongoing and NHSP are asking anyone who may have information related to the crash to contact Trooper Daniel Quartulli at 603-223-8993 or daniel.quartulli@dos.nh.gov.
