Police said the man was taken to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead. They aren’t releasing his name until family members have been notified.
No one else was in the car.
Massachusetts State Police responded to the scene to help Saugus Police with the investigation. They didn't say if weather played a role in the crash.
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection also responded to the scene after a report of an oil leak.
An earlier version of this story misidentified the victim as a woman. Local police later identified the deceased as Steven Rauseo, 74, of Saugus.
