Haverhill man arrested in 82-year-old Groveland man's killing

GROVELAND, Mass. — Groveland Police have made an arrest in the town's first homicide in almost 30 years.

Authorities said on Friday they arrested Leedell Graham, 48, of Haverhill, at around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday on one count of murder.

Graham is accused of killing 82-year-old Patsy Schena, who was found dead inside his home at 20 Governors Road in Groveland on June 21 with multiple wounds.

During his arraignment Friday, prosecutors say cameras all around the house captured Graham going through Schena's home. They also said a bag with a handle of a knife and Schena's car keys was found up the road from the crime scene.

"It contains a camp," prosecutors said. "And state police feel that's the murder weapon."

A second bag was found by a couple who was out for a walk with a dog.

"In the middle of the clothing bundle, is also a piece of jewelry, and it's identified by the family member. He's seen on surveillance the entire time," prosecutors said.

Authorities say Schena died of blunt and sharp force trauma.

The Schena family released a statement Friday afternoon saying, "We appreciate the hard work and diligence of the Essex County DA's Office, the Essex State Police detective Unit, the Groveland Police Department and the Haverhill Police department. We are especially grateful for the outpouring of support from the community. We request privacy from the media at this time as we lay our beloved father, and grandfather, to rest."

"We are relieved to have this individual in custody, however, there is much work still to be done on this investigation," Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said. "For that reason, I am unable to discuss the details of this investigation at this time.  My goal is justice for Mr. Schena through a successful prosecution. I am tremendously grateful to the investigative team for their tireless work thus far."

Schena was a well-known figure in the town, serving as the town building inspector for many years.

"He was a gentleman, and well liked by everyone. I knew him. It's cut to the core to our community," said Police Chief Jeffrey Gillian.

Police are not releasing any other details on the circumstances surrounding the murder, but they did say Friday morning that Schena and Graham knew each other through a private business transaction.

Graham is being held without bail.
