TETERBORO, N.J. — Authorities say a plane that blew two tires during takeoff at a small New Jersey airport made an emergency landing at Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, N.Y.
The Gulfstream IV jet was carrying 16 passengers when it left Teterboro Airport around 10:50 a.m. Tuesday.
One of the passengers is hip hop artist Post Malone, according to TMZ. The Syracuse, N.Y. native just took home an MTV Video Music Award for song of the year for his hit 'Rockstar.'
The pilot soon realized what had happened and began circling the airport for about 30 minutes before the jet was diverted.
The jet was headed to London Luton Airport in Luton, England. The Federal Aviation Administration says it was diverted to Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport in Westfield, Massachusetts.
"Had made a decision to come in our direction here at Westfield to land here, primarily because we have a gulfstream service center on the field," Eric Billowitz, the manager at the airport in Westfield, said.
Then, the waiting game began.
"We talked to the tower, to the air guard to make sure everyone is ready to go in case the aircraft arrived," Billowitz said.
Officials later told Boston 25 News the plane was considering other airports in the region as it was circling over western Connecticut.
It finally landed on Runway 16 at Stewart.
Billowitz said, had the plane made its way to Westfield, he had a strategy ready to go.
"They can flare the wings upon landing, and keep the weight of the main gear until the very last second before putting it down," Billowitz said.
Moments after landing, Post Malone tweeted out that he had landed, saying "Thank you for your prayers."
The FAA is investigating the incident, and no one was hurt.
