Part of building collapses in East Boston

BOSTON — A brick building in East Boston partially collapsed on Sunday around midday.

The building was unoccupied and no injuries were reported, but officials remained on scene at 4 Winthrop St for several hours.

Gas to the area was shut off since firefighters registered elevated gas readings.

Fire and city officials told Boston 25 News they will have to bring down the rest of the building after the back portion of it collapsed.

"There's a collapse zone set up, the building has shifted since we've been here, there's certainly a fear that the building could come down suddenly," said Boston Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn.

However, the building commissioner says crews have not been able to get inside the building because of the uncertain conditions.

This will force a number of businesses in Maverick Square to close their doors until further notice.

Due to concerns there may be another collapse in the area, officials have also mandated 28 people who live in nearby homes to evacuate. The Red Cross will help these residents find a temporary place to stay.

Investigators say the building was under construction, but they're still not sure what may have caused the collapse.

"Whoever was permitted to do the work obviously did not know what they were doing," said a concerned resident.

"We're not getting into the evaluation of work, we will get into that in forensic," said Boston Building Inspectional Services Commissioner Buddy Christopher. "Our situation now right now is stabilization of the building."

A technical rescue team is at the scene monitoring what they're describing as a considering shifting of the building.

The strong odor of gas in the air continues to raise concerns, prompting utilities in the neighborhood ot have been shut off while the investigation continues.
