CONCORD, NH — A rise in the number of gonorrhea infections in New Hampshire is causing officials to recommend anyone who is sexually active in the state get an STD test.
Historically, New Hampshire has had one of the lowest number of gonorrhea infections in the country, according to State Epidemiologist Dr. Benjamin Chan.
In 2016, there was a 250 percent increase in documented infections, said the state health department.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported STD in the United States. In recent years, the rate of gonorrhea in the U.S. has increased about 20 percent.
Many people who are infected may not have symptoms or only mild symptoms, which can include pain with urination and discharge. If untreated, it can cause infertility.
The state is asking that anyone who may have been exposed to the STD seek medical care immediately.
