Newton dog killed in second coyote attack in span of two days

A dog from Newton was killed in the state's second coyote attack in a two-day stretch.

Becca, a 10-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, was snatched the day after Thanksgiving out of Mike Kraine's yard in Newton by a coyote.

"She was a lovely little dog," Kraine said. "She was just adorable. You couldn't have asked for a better dog."

Kraine said he was just a few feet away when it happened.

"I could see the coyote, you could see the eyes," Kraine said. "There was a rustling of leaves and stuff, and I didn't see what happened. It was a blur."

Kraine ran to search for her, and was heartbroken when he found Becca dead in a neighbor's yard.

"It's completely shocking," Kraine said. "We never, ever thought, you know, it would be here."

Kraine and his family live off of a main road in Newton, but he was surprised to learn that others in the area have dealt with similar issues.

A day later in Sudbury, a dog was also killed by a suspected coyote on Powers Road.

"At least a half-dozen people said my dog, my cat," Kraine said. "I think there needs to be something done to at least assess the situation with the coyotes. Do a census and understand how many are out there."

Now, Kraine is hoping his loss will serve as a warning for other pet owners to make sure they don't have to go through the same heartache.

He said it's setting in that the smallest member of his family is gone.

"She's not here," Kraine said. "All of her stuff is gone, and, you know, she's not here."
