Newburyport Police release video of suspect in jewelry store robbery

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. — Police are looking for the suspect who they say broke into a jewelry store and stole an undetermined amount of jewelry.

Surveillance video shows the suspect smashing the glass front door, and then walking over the broken glass into the business.

"It was very well executed. He was in and out in 2 minutes. You can see from the video, he knew what he was doing," said Karen Khatib, co-owner of M.K. Benatti Jewelers.

Once inside, the suspect smashed his way through a display case, shattering it.

"Turned around ,smashed the glass here, took several items," Khatib said.

Her husband arrived after getting an alert that the alarm had gone off. Police arrived minutes later.

A long day of cleanup followed. It's an emotional time for this family who poured their hearts into this business over the last decade.

Their message for the thief?

"You stole from my family, my children," said Khatib.

Officers responded to the jewelry store on State Street for a glass break alarm at 2:26 a.m. Friday, police said in a statement.

Several valuables were taken. The store is still tallying up exactly how much merchandise and what exactly was stripped from the store.

While en route, officers learned that a break-in had also occurred a few hours earlier at a jewelry store in Salisbury.

When officers arrived, they found a glass front door and two display cases were broken. The suspect had fled the building prior to the officers’ arrival.

Inspector Michael Sugrue is leading the investigation into the incident, which remains active and ongoing at this time, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Newburyport Police.
