N.H. Dentist paralyzed in sledding accident

For Caroline Adams and her husband Chris, it was a picture-perfect life: newly married, bright futures, a project house to renovate in New Hampshire.

But everything changed on Sunday, January 30th on a New Hampshire sledding hill.

“My husband didn’t want to go,” Caroline told Boston 25 reporter Bob Ward. “He’s a gem, and he grants me what I want. He wanted to work on our house which we need to renovate.”

Caroline snapped a selfie with her husband just moments before the sledding run that literally turned everything upside down.

“I was hoping it would spark good memories not, ‘Hey it’s the last time I would ever be standing.’ But you get what you get sometimes,” Caroline said.

Caroline shot a cell phone video of Chris’s run. Midway thru Caroline’s run, she turned to avoid a group of young kids. She hit a jump and was thrown eight feet into the air.

“I just remember it was so long in the air. It just seems like you hang. And I just remember, it was so blue, the sky. I thought, wow. I’m in trouble. This is not going to end well. Then I hit the ground. And boy it hurt,” Caroline said.

‘I looked at my husband, I would say I’m a pretty tough person and I said, ‘Yep, I’m scared. I’m in trouble.’ I knew I was paralyzed,” Caroline added.

The accident severed Caroline’s spine. She is permanently paralyzed from the waist down. And right now, she is at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown building up her strength.

Caroline is a dentist, and she plans to return to her work, but things will be different. A GoFundMe account to help Caroline and Chris pay for all these new expenses now totals more than 135-thousand dollars.

The sledding accident has taken much away from Caroline Adams, but it has not stolen her optimism.

“You can’t change it, can you? What’s the point of being miserable? You only have so many years on this planet, you might as well enjoy what you can. I still have use of my arms. There are still loads I can do,” said Caroline.

Adams will remain at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital for at least another month preparing for her new life. Nothing will stop her. Not even that fateful moment on a sledding hill in New Hampshire.
