New Hampshire family shares video of Amazon driver picking up blown over American flag

MERRIMACK, N.H. — Caught on camera, a woman carefully unfurled an American flag that was blown from its holder on a very windy day in Merrimack, N.H. last Friday. And it’ wasn’t even her own.

“It def hit a string on our heart that she took a second to do that,” said Kelly Leary, who is the homeowner.

And the woman who tugged at homeowner Leary’s heart is Brendlis Garcia.

“I was just not ok with just leaving it there,” Garcia said.

Brendlis, who also goes by Bree, is an Amazon driver.

“I got to the house, I noticed the flag was on the lawn, and I went to deliver the package and did the whole shenanigans, and went back and grabbed the flag,” Garcia said.

Bree is also in the Army Reserves and leaving that American flag on the ground was not an option.

“I just stand true for what the flag represents and stands for, and it was just the right thing to do,” Garcia said.

Leary was so struck by the act of kindness that she posted her Ring doorbell video on Facebook. The response was amazing.

“I cannot believe how many people have watched the video, but I’m so glad they have because all I wanted to do was to make sure that her kind gesture did not go unnoticed,” Leary said.

The flag also had sentimental value for Kelly’s husband, Steve. His uncle gave it to them when they moved here back in 2016.

“He passed away while working on our house, so that’s why it meant so much to us,” Steve Leary said.

Wednesday on Zoom, they met for the first time and the Learys got to thank Bree.

“I just wanted to make sure you found out how much we did appreciate it,” Kelly Leary told her.

That was something that made Garcia smile.

“Well thank you for that. It makes me happy to hear,” Garcia said.

The Learys’ flag that had flown for five years was torn that day by the strong winds. The Learys told Boston 25 News that they will retire that one and replace it.
