New Boston schools superintendent announces 100-day plan

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – Several weeks after starting, Boston Public Schools Superintendent Tommy Chang has released a 100-day plan, featuring ways to improve the education students receive.

Chang’s seven-page report outlines a set of values determined while he was working with the transition team and community members.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us, and I still have much listening and learning to do,” said Chang. “But if we believe that every child, every student in Boston Public Schools, no matter their race, language, or ability-background, can live up to their full potential and achieve at high-levels, then we can — and we will — inspire excellence in every corner of our city to create a world-class education system.”

Part of the plan includes an audit of all high schools in the district to determine which schools are teaching students to the core curriculum standards.

He also released plans to work on a financial plan that can help stabilize the district.

"I applaud Superintendent Chang for his work on these important issues facing our students and welcome him to the BPS community,” Mayor Marty Walsh said. “Boston children deserve the very best from our schools. This plan is major a step in laying the necessary groundwork to begin building a brighter future for all of our students so that they can excel in the classroom and in life.”

Updating technology at the high schools is also a major part of Chang’s announced plan. He said that is primarily focused on the first half of the upcoming school year.

“Boston will serve as a city where the promise of innovation can take form,” said Chang. “We want Madison Park to become a centerpiece for what vocational education can be in this state and this country.”
