BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) –The Franklin Park Zoo has announced the name of a new giraffe calf that was born late last year.
Henrietta was the name chosen out of 1,100 name submissions in the Baby Giraffe Naming Contest which ran from December to January. Suggestions expanded beyond Massachusetts with names coming from California, Texas, Alaska, and many other states. Other top names included Savannah, Bella, and Gina.
"We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of interest in this exciting birth," said John Lineham, Zoo New England president and CEO.
Along with the submissions, many people included personal stories as to why they chose the names.
"It was incredibly touching to read through the submissions," added Lineham.
Henrietta was born November 27 in the giraffe barn at Franklin Park Zoo. Her parents Beau and Jana were bred as part of the Association of Zoo's and Aquariums (AZA) Giraffe
Species Survival Plan (SSP) in which Zoo New England is heavily involved.
Public viewing of the giraffes will likely be in the spring due to sensitive temperature drops.
