The National Guard helping turn DCU Center into field hospital

WORCESTER, Mass. — The National Guard will help turn the DCU Center back into a field hospital.

A few dozen members of the Guard are expected there on Monday.

Worcester’s city leaders say Dec. 6 is when the field hospital will open. When it does, it will have a capacity of more than 200 patients.

Health leaders have previously said the coronavirus patients seen at the field hospital will not be the most severe. Those will be treated at the main hospitals.

The biggest issue isn’t necessarily going to be a lack of PPE or piece of equipment, but rather healthy medical staff.

Worcester Medical Director Dr. Michael Hirsh said earlier, “We’re seeing so much medical personnel coming down with [the virus] that I fear that that’s going to be our shortage this time.

“It’s not going to be PPE, ventilators. It’s not going to be ICU space. It’s going to be healthy medical staff to take care of the patients.”

Dr. Hirsh said with that at stake, it’s up to everyone to do whatever we can do lower transmission rates.
