WELLFLEET, Mass. — Firefighters remain at the scene of a massive three-alarm fire at an excavating company in Wellfleet early Monday.
A witness on the street reportedly alerted firefighters to the blaze on Route 6 around 11 Sunday night.
Crews from as far away as Sandwich were called to help fight the flames and water had to be trucked in because of a lack of fire hydrants in the area.
“We are a non-hydrant district up here in Wellfleet and all the water had to be brought in by tankers first and then pumped up the hill, quite a ways off the road. So we had issues -- issues with water supply due to no hydrants," said Kent Farrenkopf, the Eastham Fire Department's fire chief.
Neighboring fire departments brought in about six tankers filled with about 2,000 gallons of water in each truck, fire officials said.
The business that occupies the site at on Route 6 appears online as E-Z-Doze-It Excavating. The website for the business lists septic installations and landscape construction as the main services it provides.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but a fire official said it appears that the fire started in a three-bay commercial garage on the property.
