QUINCY, Mass. — Summer travel season is notorious for people heading south from Boston to South Shore beaches. But for drivers who use the Fore River Bridge will be dealing with traffic tie-ups.
Starting in June, traffic on the bridge, which carries traffic on Route 3A between Quincy and Weymouth, will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
MassDOT is advising drivers in the area to prepare for extra traffic and consider alternate routes until the work is complete in September.
The original Fore River Bridge was closed in 2003. Since then drivers have been using a temporary bridge to cross the river.
A new bridge is already constructed, but it's not yet ready for traffic.
“We’ve hit a critical stage in the project. The bridge is done and ready to go we need to connect all the ramps and roadways to it,” a MassDOT spokesman said.
Drivers who use the bridge are being told the best detour is to get off at the Southern Artery wind through Weymouth Landing coming up to North Street to get back on Route 3A going South.
MassDOT says the new bridge will be ready for traffic on Oct. 1.
