BOSTON — The New England states are bracing for the extreme cold that is already closing some schools and threatening the power grid this week.
The artic blast coming through the state on Tuesday will be the coldest day of the year, according to Boston 25 Meteorologists. A Wind Chill Advisory will be in effect west of I-495 for “feels like temperatures” as low as -20 degrees. The Boston 25 weather team say to expect subzero wind chills in the morning and a cold afternoon too. Highs 10-15 degrees will easily feel like 0 with gusts 20-30 mph continuing.
Temperatures that low can result in frostbite to exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
According to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, this week’s frigid temperatures should be taken seriously and there are numerous ways to stay safe during this extreme weather.

Keep pets indoors, limit time outside, watch for signs of frostbite, check on neighbors, & use alternate heat sources safely.https://t.co/HIrM3hZTWX pic.twitter.com/J2uun4HLaI
Make sure to dress in multiple layers when you leave the house and to cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs. Reduce outdoor activities for the whole family, including pets. Follow instructions from public safety officials.
Also, it’s important to make sure emergency generators or secondary heating systems are well ventilated. Follow recommended safety precautions when using space heaters, a fireplace, or a woodstove to heat your home. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.
Turning on the heat to beat the cold? Remember that home heating equipment is the main source of #CarbonMonoxide in the home. Be sure #CO alarms are installed and working on all floors. https://t.co/wXb2rWitbm
