MassDOT warning drivers to brace for ‘horrible morning commute’

ANDOVER, Mass. — Temperatures started fairly warm but began dropping quickly, leading to concerns over a flash freeze on roadways statewide.

State highway department officials are warning commuters and travelers of what’s expected to be a “horrible” commute. Overhead highway road signs have weather notices posted to warn those driving about the icy conditions anticipated.

“We can’t put out materials and driving chemicals to prevent that ice from forming,” said state’s Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver. “We are going to be in a reactionary mode throughout this storm.”

Overnight rain would have washed away any pre-treatment of roads. Instead, MassDOT crews are monitoring conditions while preparing to salt surfaces once the changeover happens.

In addition, they are asking drivers to be mindful of the treacherous roads and give themselves extra time, as well as noting that if you see a road surface that appears wet, it may well be ice.
