Mass. State Police trooper indicted for shooting at ATV rider

BOSTON — A grand jury has indicted a Massachusetts State Police trooper authorities say shot an all-terrain vehicle driver during a confrontation on a Boston highway.

The Suffolk district attorney's office says Trooper Matthew Sheehan shot and injured 28-year-old Aderito Monteiro during a confrontation with 25 ATV and dirt bike riders on Interstate 93 in February 2018.

He's scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 10 on charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Sheehan was one of 13 officers present during the altercation and the only one to open fire.

Prosecutors say Sheehan grabbed a semi-automatic service rifle out of his cruiser despite having a handgun on his hip.

Sheehan has been suspended without pay.

It could not be determined if he has a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
