MANCHESTER, N.H. — Manchester, NH Police are asking recent Walmart shoppers to check their credit cards receipts, after a credit card skimming device was discovered on a terminal.
Authorities say the skimmer was operating, undetected, for a full week, from March 17th to March 23rd.
The skimming device fit over the terminal, making it impossible for shoppers or employees to notice.
Manchester Police released a store surveillance photo of the suspect.
Authorities say the best way to protect yourself from being scammed at a skimmer, is to use a credit card and not a debit card.
“If somebody gets your information thru a skimmer like this, they automatically have your account number and they can start draining your account,” said Manchester, NH Police spokesperson Heather Hamel. “This can cause you a lot of problems, depleting your balance. And also, there are things like automatic payments that can be affected, it’s just a lot of hassle.”
If you shopped at the Walmart Super Center between March 16th-23rd, police ask that you check your credit card statement. If you find suspicious activity, call your financial institution, then call Manchester, NH Police.
Police also recommended that the use of a credit card is better than a debit card when shopping.
“If someone gets your personal bank information they can steal directly from your account, which not only depletes your balance but compromises automatic bill payments,” police said.
