Citizens Bank is closing 26 branches located inside Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts starting next month.
“We continue to evaluate, evolve and adjust our branch strategy across our network, and can confirm that we have decided to transform these Stop & Shop in-store branches to self-service kiosks,” Citizens spokesperson Rory Sheehan told Boston 25 News via email. “In-store branches remain part of our overall strategy to help customers bank when, where and how they prefer, but these reformats are part of our ongoing effort to review customer patterns, optimize branch locations, and make adjustments as appropriate.”
The branches will be replaced with self-service ATM kiosks where customers can make routine transactions, such as deposits and withdrawals. In most cases, a full-service Citizens branch is located less than a mile away.
“We value our customers and make every effort to transition them to the nearest local branch as seamlessly as possible, in addition to continuing to invest in our digital and mobile capabilities to allow them to easily bank with us in any location,” Sheehan said.
Citizens is encouraging impacted employees to apply for open positions within the company. Sheehan said the company has “found a place already for the majority of colleagues who would be impacted.”
The branches being closed will begin to transition to self-service kiosks in early next year. In a few of the locations, Citizens will be piloting a virtual kiosk which would allow a customer to talk directly to a banker in the company’s contact center.
82 Citizens branches will remain in Massachusetts Stop & Shop stores.
“Citizens and Stop & Shop are pleased to have recently renewed our multi-year partnership and we look forward to continuing to serve customers together,” Sheehan said.
“Stop & Shop looks forward to its continued partnership with Citizens and to continue offering our customers the convenience of banking in our stores with the transition to self-service kiosks at a select number of locations,” Stop & Shop spokesperson Jennifer Brogan told Boston 25 News via email.
