BROCKTON, Mass. — A local baseball team announced a historic signing Wednesday afternoon when they welcomed the first female player in league history onto their 2023 roster.
Marika Lyszczyk, who is also the first female NCAA baseball catcher for the Sonoma State University Seawolves men’s team, will be suiting up behind the plate for the upcoming season.
Canadian born Lyszczyk boasts a strong defensive game and has turned heads playing for the Whalley Chiefs, the Rivier University Raiders men’s baseball team, and the Sag Harbour Whalers.
She will take the field at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton in May, at the end of the 2023 college semester.
“She’s an incredible catcher and all-around player,” says Norm Laviolette, owner of the Brockton Rox. “We’re lucky to have her join the Rox and look forward to seeing her drive, determination, and leadership come to life at Campanelli.”
Last year’s roster boasted the sons of Red Sox legends David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez and Keith Foulke — Lyszczyk now joins their clubhouse.
““We’re dedicated to helping young players sharpen their skills and perfect their game, while also providing the tools and support to help them thrive educationally, professionally, and socially,” said GM Tom Tracey. “Everyone in the organization, from the ownership to the coaches and players, are looking forward to welcoming her to Boston this summer.”
The Brockton Rox are a collegiate summer baseball team as part of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League.
