Brawl breaks out at hockey game between rival schools

WEYMOUTH — A fight broke out Saturday night toward the end of the Weymouth and Braintree hockey match, but it wasn’t on the ice.

“If you go to any sporting events, it’s pretty intense these days especially after being locked up for so long,” said Weymouth parent Kricin Walsh.

Intense may be an understatement. The video shows several punches thrown in the stands between the rival schools.

“Yeah, they don’t like each other,” said Weymouth student Eowyn Vucci.

Weymouth police say several officers responded to the fight and are investigating exactly what happened but witnesses say they are pretty sure they know how it started.

“They said someone threw an egg into the Braintree section and then someone threw a slushy at the Weymouth section and then they start a fighting,” said Vucci.

This is one of several incidents we’ve reported on at local hockey matches. Earlier this month Attleboro’s police chief came under scrutiny for how he helped break up a fight right outside the rink.

An altercation between coaches last month in a Beverly and Danvers Hockey game lead to one coach’s resignation.

Mass hockey president admitted to being almost 1000 referees short in October after several incidents including one where a referee sat outside a locker room door preventing an angry coach from coming in.

Still, in this case, parents say don’t blame hockey.

“The high school kids were on the ice,” said Walsh. “They had nothing to do with it. It was the fans being unruly so I think that should not really reflect on hockey itself.”

We reached out to both Weymouth and Braintree schools for comment, but have not yet heard back. In Weymouth
