REVERE, Mass. — It’s not summer yet, but temperatures will soar into the mid-90s this weekend. That will make it the hottest of the season so far.

People will be trying to find ways to beat the heat and stay cool.

Folks walking along Revere Beach told us how they plan to avoid the heat.

“Just air conditioning, stay inside. I don’t like the hot weather.”

For those looking to get out of the house, a beach is always an option.

But before you get in the water, remember that ocean water temperatures are in the 50s, which can be dangerous.

The cold water can cool your body down four times faster than cold air, and that cold shock can lead to some dramatic changes in breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. All of which increase your risk of drowning.

I spoke with Jeff Hall from the American Red Cross, he told me children are at a greater risk.

“The first sign of hypothermia is uncontrolled shivering. Look at their lips. If their lips are starting to get a little dark or turn blue, that’s another sure sign that it’s time for them to get out of the water, get warmed up, put a towel around them.” said Hall.

Most beaches don’t have lifeguards yet, so use extra caution.

It’s not just ocean waters that are cooler. You also have to be careful at lakes, rivers, and pools.

Massachusetts is offering free swim classes to anyone over the age of four this year. You can find out more information: https://www.mass.gov/orgs/department-of-conservation-recreation
