CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — An art exhibit opening Thursday in Harvard Square will feature more than 100 original works from Banksy, one of the world’s most mysterious artists.
The British street artist known to the public only by his pseudonym is infamous for his graffiti-style, stencil artwork popping up on streets, walls and public places internationally.
“The Art of Banksy” is a touring exhibit that features a collection of works sourced from private buyers across the globe.
“You’d have to travel the world to see these things on the street, and now you can see them here in Boston,” said Corey Ross, president and CEO of Starvox Exhibits, which is presenting the exhibit with producers GTP Exhibitions. “This is a collection of authentic pieces that collectors would otherwise have in their homes, in warehouses, gathering dust.”
Banksy’s canvasses, screen prints and sculptures feature his anti-establishment political messages and cynicism about current events and public figures.
Featured works include “Flower Thrower” and “Rude Copper.
His most valuable work, “Girl with Balloon,” shredded at auction in 2018, sold for a record $21.8 million in London.
Guests enjoying a sneak peek Wednesday before the opening at one of Harvard University’s Coop buildings smirked at the works and discussed them with one another.
“I’m more intrigued than ever about who he is,” said Mary Stack. “I think he’s a bit of an enigma, but I’ve learned more about him, because there’s a whole scope to his work I didn’t know.”
“His art is fascinating,” said Stack’s friend Denise Jillson. “He makes really deep and important political statements.”
The exhibit runs from Feb. 17 to April 3. Tickets can be bought at www.banksyexhibit.com.
