BOURNE, Mass. – A Mass. Maritime Academy student is awaiting punishment after wearing a German uniform with swastikas on it for Halloween.
The student has not been identified, but the school’s president, Admiral Francis McDonald acknowledged the incident.
“I will confirm today that we had someone at breakfast today in that costume,” he said. “That was noticed by fellow students right away. Commandant’s office was notified immediately.”
The admiral says the student was told of his poor choice and to change. The student remains in school while the incident is investigated, what that punishment will be is unclear.
The admiral says this costume was offensive, and this matter will be a lesson for students at the prestigious school. He added he is proud fellow students stepped up immediately when they first saw the costume and reported it.
“The reaction by his peers gives me the confidence that we are moving the needle on matters of hate and bigotry,” he said.
The decision on the student’s punishment is expected in two weeks. The admiral neglected to say how serious the punishment could be, but several Mass. Maritime alums told Boston 25 News that expulsion is not out of the question.
