Man sneaks through airport security, tries to hide inside plane cargo hold

BOSTON — A man snuck through an emergency exit at Logan Airport on Monday before running through the tarmac and eventually climbing into an airplane's cargo hold.

At around 12:30 p.m., State Police troopers responded to reports of a security breach in Terminal C at Logan Airport, one of the busiest in the country.

The responding trooper found a man had exited the terminal through an emergency exit, accessed the tarmac and briefly entered a plane's cargo hold but was immediately removed by Jet Blue ground operations employees.

The suspect, identified as Sergiu Parfeni, 31, of Malden, was charged with trespassing, disorderly conduct, and interfering with aircraft operation.

State Police did a sweep of the cargo hold Parfeni got inside, but did not find any hazardous materials or anything suspicious. Authorities say there is no evidence that Parfeni acted with terrorist intent.

Parfeni is expected to be arraigned some time on Tuesday in East Boston District Court.

Boston 25 News Secuirty Expert Dan Linskey says that, while it's not every day you hear of someone running on the tarmac and climbing into the cargo area of a plane, the incident was handled in the best way possible.

"The system and the security program as designed was in effect at Logan and worked," said Linskey. "Obviously we want to see if there's anything we can learn from this.​​​​​"
