Man arrested in Arlington after standoff with police

ALRINGTON, Mass. — Police responded to a barricaded man on Silk Street Friday morning. Police say the standoff began with the man wielding a knife at arriving officers.

Arlington police first responded to the scene around 6 a.m. after getting reports of a man screaming in the backyard of a residence.

When the officers arrived at the scene, police say the man was armed with a large knife and began threatening the responding officers. Out of an abundance of caution, the SWAT team was brought in to assist. The Arlington Fire Department also responded.

Police say officers were able to secure the area quickly and were able to evacuate the four other residents of the home.

“I am very proud that our officers fell back on their training and used de-escalation techniques and less lethal options,” Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan said. “This was a clearly violent individual and our officers were able to take him into custody without serious injury to anyone involved.”

The standoff ended around 7 a.m. Police identified the man as 27-year-old Sangpo Sherpa, who was known to police prior to his arrest.

Sherpa was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, threatening to commit a crime, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace.
