LYNN, Mass. — An investigation into private text messages containing racially offensive language between two Lynn Police officers has lead to the resignation of 5 officers, 1 officer being terminated, and the suspension of 2 other officers.

Boston 25 News has now learned that the investigation that led to those officers being placed on administrative leave began after the Essex County District Attorney’s Office “provided the Lynn Police Department with information concerning improper conduct involving members of [the] department” according to a release issued by Lynn Police, Friday.

The release goes on to say that information provided to Lynn Police by the Essex County DA, “was obtained as a result of a search warrant that was sought by the Salem Police as part of an investigation into allegations of domestic abuse involving a Lynn police officer.”

Once officials in Lynn were made aware of the allegations, the Lynn Police Professional Standards Division started an investigation, per Police.

The investigation found private text messages between two officers that “included racially offensive language and evidence of drug use” according to officials.

As a result of the investigation conducted, Lynn Police say “five officers, including the two individuals involved in the text exchange, chose to resign. One officer was terminated following a hearing before a designated hearings officer and two officers were suspended.”

In a statement at the end of Friday’s press release, Lynn Police Chief Reddy stated “The actions of these individuals do not reflect the core values of this department. We believe that the results of this investigation reflect our commitment to transparency and accountability to the people we serve. We are committed to upholding those values.”
