PITTSFIELD, Maine — A Maine driver traveling the wrong way on Interstate 95 was killed in a crash that also injured another driver on New Year’s Eve, state police said.

Ivan Cunningham, 82, of Corinna, was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said Tuesday. Another driver, Nathaniel Blanchard, 27, of Stetson, was flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with injuries that are considered non-life-threatening.

At about 11 a.m. Tuesday, state police received calls about a wrong-way driver traveling northbound in the southbound lane of I-95 near mile 142 in Burnham.

Minutes later, as troopers were on their way to intercept the vehicle, reports of a head-on crash came in at mile 147 in Pittsfield, state police said.

Investigators determined Cunningham was driving his 2013 Ford Focus northbound in the southbound lane before striking a 2023 Ford F-150, driven by Blanchard, head-on.

Troopers, working with the Maine Department of Transportation, shut down I-95 southbound at Exit 150 for approximately two hours, diverting traffic while emergency crews responded.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
