WORCESTER, Mass. — The Worcester police recovered a number of grave markers recently stolen from a local cemetery, officials. say.
Officials received a report of two stolen bronze plaques from St. John’s Cemetery on December 31, according to Worcester Police.
Officers from the Neighborhood Response Team recovered the bronze plaques after checking several scrap metal facilities, officials say.
While checking the scrap facilities, officers located an additional 15 veteran grave markers that had been scrapped at the same time, police say.
64-year-old Arthur Theurer was arrested as a result of the investigation, Worcester police say.
Theurer is facing several charges including receiving stolen property over $1200, vandalizing a gravestone, sale of a stolen grave marker, and receipt of a stolen grave marker, police say.
The Worcester police are working to figure out who the remaining grave markers belong to. They ask anyone who may recognize them to please call the Neighborhood Response Team at 508-799-8664.
