Woman injured in Hyde Park porch collapse

BOSTON — A woman was injured after falling through the stairs of a back porch in Hyde Park Friday.

A Ring doorbell camera captured a portion of the terrifying fall at the River Street multifamily. The woman fell through the third-floor staircase and onto the stairs below before tumbling through the collapsing railing and hitting a parked car in the adjacent driveway.

“I heard a loud boom. So I thought it was a car accident, and my little sister went to open the back door, and she was like, ‘Oh, my god,’” said Ariel Davis who lives in the unit below her aunt and cousin, whom the victim was visiting. “The stairs were collapsed, and she was on the ground. So I helped her up. And she had bruises and stuff on her body, cuts. And her clothes were ripped.”

The victim, who friends say is in her late 20s, was rushed to the hospital conscious and alert. She is expected to recover.

Her fall began from about 25 feet above the ground, Boston Fire District 12 Chief Paul Luciano estimated.

Luciano secured the scene as a building inspector assessed it.

Neighbors told Boston 25 News they have asked building management to fix a broken stair, but the work never happened.

Boston 25 News could not reach a building manager on Friday.

“Just by looking at it, anyone can tell that the craftsmanship isn’t correct,” Luciano said. “I don’t know the age of it. It’s obviously dilapidated.”

A Boston Inspectional Services crew boarded up the missing railing and back entrance, so no one would get hurt before the stairs are repaired.

Luciano and the building inspector were concerned about the top-floor residents’ safety if a fire were to break out with no rear escape route. Luciano coordinated for a fire detail to remain on the scene until permanent repairs are made.
