Will winter storm hit Massachusetts this weekend? Forecast tools show varying tracks

DEDHAM, Mass. — A winter storm will develop over the southeastern United States this week and strengthen over the Atlantic on Saturday, although weather models as of Tuesday morning weren’t in agreement on the chance for snow in Massachusetts.

The European model currently shows the storm mostly missing the Bay State well to the south, however, the Global Forecast System (American model) is calling for a nor’easter with several inches of snow locally, Boston 25 Meteorologist Shiri Spear said in her latest forecast.

The storm system could arrive in New England on Saturday or Saturday night, according to Spear.

If the storm holds a track based on European model data, parts of Massachusetts would get a patchy coating of snow, according to Spear. Up to a “couple of inches” of snow is possible if the GFS model holds.

“Low pressure develops, it swings in snow. This is just one of many of my tools and it just happens to be the wettest solution. I’ve got several other solutions that look mostly like a miss,” Spear said. “These are trends that we’ll continue to watch.”
