‘We’ll see how it goes’: Day 1 of Sumner Tunnel shutdown

BOSTON — Day one of the Sumner Tunnel shutdown is in the books with drivers seeing plenty of red both on the GPS and with all those brake lights especially when leaving Logan Airport.

“We spent about 9 years here, so it comes as no surprise that there’s never an easy traffic way here in Boston, so we’re prepared,” said Andy Armacost, who flew into Boston from North Dakota.

Andy and Kathy Armacost just flew into Boston to visit family and they were warned about the Sumner tunnel closing, so they made a plan to take a shuttle bus to the Blue line after leaving the airport to avoid that traffic.

“We are planning on getting the bus to the T to meet up with our family at State Street so we’ll see how it goes,” said Kathy Armacost.

It was still easy to get a cab or an Uber or Lyft when leaving Logan Wednesday.

The problem is once you hit the road, especially if you’re heading north of Boston.

We plugged in Somerville into the GPS from Logan Airport, which is just a few miles away and it would take anywhere from 35-50 minutes to get there Wednesday evening.

That’s because, without the Sumner tunnel, traffic is funneled through Revere or south through the Ted Williams tunnel.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
