Wednesday deadline for tents to disappear from Mass & Cass corridor

BOSTON — The deadline for all tents to clear from Boston’s Mass and Cass corridor is this Wednesday.

The city announced the January 12 deadline last month. They vowed to offer every person a housing opportunity by then. Fliers were posted on dozens of tents last week that remain in the area to remind people about the cleanup. A recent survey conducted by the city of Boston indicated that more than 140 people were still living in encampments.

“Some of the tents collapsed in the snow, a fair number did, and yet there are still people who want to stay out there,” said Sue Sullivan, Executive Director of the Newmarket Business Association.

Sullivan told Boston 25 News that fire officials confiscated at least a dozen propane heaters from tents in the last week and a half.

“We’ve had three tents go up in flames in the last three weeks. We can’t allow this to continue out there. Somebody is going to die,” Sullivan said.

Mayor Wu announced a news conference scheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. ahead of this week’s cleanup.

She’s expected to provide an update on the city’s response alongside other Boston officials, including Dr. Monica Bharel, Chief of Housing Sheila Dillon, Executive Director of the Boston Public Health Commission Dr. Bisola Ojikutu, BPD Superintendent Gerard Bailey, BPD Lieutenant Peter Messina of the Street Outreach Unit, Chief of Streets Jascha Franklin-Hodge, and Superintendent of Street Operations for the Public Works Department Mike Brohel.

South End and Roxbury neighborhood leaders have scheduled a community zoom meeting on the topic this Tuesday at 4 p.m.
