‘We called this wrong’: Haverhill apologizes for not canceling school amid harsh weather

HAVERHILL, Mass — About nine inches of snow piled up in the Haverhill area Tuesday, but despite the slushy mess, schools were still open.

“It was horrible today, like I was sliding everywhere and I got four wheel drive, you know, if I didn’t have the blade to drop the blade I was going in the woods a couple times,” said Frankie Milone, who drove a plow in the area all day.

Haverhill Public Schools apologized to families, saying it made a bad call and probably should have canceled school.

In a letter the district said:

“We called this one wrong, and we are so sorry! All reports indicated it would not switch from rain to snow until after 1:00 p.m. in Haverhill, but as you know, we started seeing it come down steadily mid-morning. Some families chose to keep their students home today, and others dismissed them early. All student absences and dismissals will be excused for the day.”

Custodial crews have been working into the night trying to clear snow from school properties like Haverhill High School.

Meanwhile, plow drivers will continue clearing the roads and parking lots well into Wednesday morning.

Haverhill School leaders say they haven’t made a decision about school on Wednesday and whether there will be any delays or closures, but the latest that decision will be made will be by 5:30 AM Wednesday.
