“On behalf of the entire Duxbury Fire Department, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this tragic event, their family members, and all the members of our public safety community who responded,” Chief Robert G. Reardon and Deputy Chief Brian J. Monahan said in a joint statement.
Cora Clancy, 5, and Dawson Clancy, 3, were strangled inside their Summer Street home by their mother, 32-year-old Lindsay Clancy, Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz said Wednesday.
Police officers and firefighters responded to 47 Summer St. on Tuesday evening after a man, later identified as Lindsay Clancy’s husband, returned home and called 911 to report his wife’s attempted suicide.
Cruz said Lindsay Clancy survived a jump out of a second-story window. She was taken to a local hospital.
When first responders entered the home, they discovered three unconscious children suffering from “obvious signs of severe trauma,” according to Cruz. Cora and Dawson were rushed to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead. A 7-month-old infant boy survived and remains hospitalized at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Reardon and Monahan said the horrible sights of the tragic event have taken a toll on the public safety community, including emergency crew members from Kingston, Marshfield, Pembroke, Hanover, Hanson, and Halifax who assisted Duxbury officials at the scene.
“Tragedies like these are always difficult to comprehend and process. We are all left struggling with many emotions. Please know that all public safety personnel have been offered, and will continue to be offered, needed support,” Reardon and Monahan said. “We have brought in professional help for not only our first responders but also the neighboring town’s first responders. To all those who responded - we care about you. If you or a colleague need support, please reach out to our department 781-934-5693.”
Lindsay Clancy remains under police guard at the hospital as she awaits arraignment on two counts of homicide, and three counts each of strangulation and assault and battery with a deadly weapon in the deaths of her children.
Reardon and Monahan also thanked the residents of Duxbury and surrounding communities for the “extraordinary care and compassion” they have shown during this difficult time.
“You have all been helpers. We continue to respond to emergencies and your firefighters will always be here when you call,” they said.
The incident involving Lindsay Clancy remains under investigation.
