BOSTON — Water service has been restored to residents after a water main break flooded parts of Boylston Street on Friday afternoon.

The Water and Sewer Commission says the sand beneath the asphalt made it difficult to locate the underground pipe to fix the break Crews needed to remove 13 feet of bad pipe and replace it.

Shoppers told Boston 25 they were navigating stores when the water came gushing down and workers had to place pallets of wood down to help them across.

“It’s like an obstacle course,” said one shopper.

Water service was restored around 11 p.m. on Friday and the road is scheduled to reopen on Saturday morning.
