Water main break closes busy road near Mass. Pike in Newton

NEWTON, Mass. — A water main break has closed parts of a busy road near the Massachusetts Turnpike in Newton on Wednesday morning.

Water filled Washinton Street and police blocked the road from Centre Street to St. James Street as a rushing river formed.

The water reached Interstate 90, taking up most of the right-hand lane and shoulder of the highway.

The cause of the water main break is unknown but several city workers are out cleaning the mess.

It’s unclear if this water has anywhere to go at this point, or how it might be drained.

There is an assisted living facility nearby and they tell Boston 25 News they do have water so this break doesn’t appear to be affecting them.

Boston 25 has also contacted the Newton mayor’s office to see if they have any updates on this situation, which will certainly impact drivers throughout the morning.

Motorists should avoid the area until further notice.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
